Odds and Ends #6

“If, as occasionally happens, there are two subtitles in the original (an awkward contingency), a colon normally precedes the first and a semicolon the second.” —The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition, §14.98

  • Google has added pony Easter eggs to Hangout, as Geek.com reports.
  • Botcon gets an exclusive Transformers-MLP crossover comic cover.
  • Katie Cook is at Motor City Comic Con today, as The Daily Oat reports. Go and meet her!
  • Here are the Q3 2013 results for DHX Media (I wish I knew why they don’t call it Q1). Cantercast informs me that this is due to fiscal year’s not conforming to calender years. Thanks! Since it’s a Canadian company, I then would’ve expected it to run from April 1 to March 31 of the next year, but that doesn’t add up either. Oh well.
  • Vectored Thrust again reminds us to remind you to say #ThankYouDHX.
  • There will be a black and white reprint of the first edition of the comic (so people can learn to appreciate Heather Breckel’s coloring work). Thanks to RealZero for the submission (but it had popped up minutes earlier on our spy satellites anyway).
  • Have a look at some script pages, in case you weren’t at Equestria LA or missed them.
  • A new, mysterious (probably Equestria Girls) blu-ray is on the horizon. Originally slanted for “August,” the title now just says “fall,” but the date “August 6, 2013” has remained unchanged. Here an additional source from blu-ray.com. Breaking news: The blu-ray.com listing now shows the title “My Little Pony: Equestria Girls Blu-ray,” so Equestria Girls confirmed!
  • One of Steffan Andrews’s songs has been cut from Equestria Girls. Bugger. But Daniel Ingram approves of the trailer song, which is not his work. Furthermore, Mr. Andrews might or might not have scored another episode.
  • Finally congrats to Daniel Ingram and Steffan Andrews for their Leo Award nomination for the score of Magical Mystery Cure. Congrats also to Marcel Duperreault, Todd Araki, Jason Fredrickson, and Adam McGhie for “Best Overall Sound” in Sleepless in Ponyville. More congrats to all the other nominees; here a few of those we know: Sam Vincent (Slugterra), Lee Tockar (Slugterra), Andrew Francis (Slugterra), Shannon Chan Kent (Slugterra), Vincent Tong (Yoga Town). Who did I forget?

There has always been a lot of talk about the “Portal to Equestria.” Would you go if you could? What if you couldn’t come back? What if this? What if that?

If you ask me, this line of thinking is missing the point. The portal to Equestria isn’t a great big hole in the wall. The portal to Equestria is our hearts.

You go there every time you show kindness to a stranger. When you stand up and tell the truth regardless of the personal cost, when you make someone laugh and bring a smile to their face, when you are generous with what is yours to give, what you’re really doing is reaching out and touching a piece of Equestria.

Ponyjoy is an energy. You can use that energy to make the world a better place. Even if you only do it in small ways, (with a listening ear, or a helping hand), you are still bringing Equestria home. Because Equestria is a dream – the kind of dream that changes the world. But the problem with dreams is that they can only begin to take on lives of their own when you act on them.

Equestria isn’t some place you can step into and leave all your friends and family behind, and hope to live happily ever after. Equestria is that feeling you get when you stand by the ones you love, even when Earth happens to suck.

It’s not some far away, out of reach place that you can never find, no matter how hard you wish for it. Equestria is right here, right now, right under our noses. It’s the spark of friendship that, as Twilight Sparkle put it, “lives in the hearts of us all.”

Equestria is us.

Equestria is you. When you stop and think about it, it always has been.

EQLA – The Editorial

My thoughts were filled with hopes that this visit to Equestria LA would be as good as last year. When I left, I couldn’t imagine how any convention could beat what I just experienced. It was an amazing weekend, filled with great panels, new friends, and the general badassery that is the pony community. Some of the best times I had in general are conventions, and this is definitely no exceptions. I’d really recommend anyone go to a pony con just for the amazingly humble experience that is us!

I had some awesome interviews, not with the show staff nor community guests, but with the vendors, I felt like they are a greatly under appreciated part of the con scene, and I want to shed some light on what it is like to make your way as a vendor.

Can’t buy any more soused herring (“Matjes”)? Then how about an awkward segue to DRM-infected online purchases instead?

Dear Princess Luna,

Well hello there fair princess. I promised a few weeks ago to give our lovely Princess of the Night a little fair treatment. So may we entertain you with the music of fandom? On this episode Midnight Shadow guests while sandy is out. And Markarian, Bejoty, and Pony Tim of Everfree Northwest come on to talk shop about their upcoming convention. In addition to telling us what really psyches them for next year we get into Equestria LA discussions, if streaming makes sense for conventions, continued discussion on Equestria Girls, and custom voiceboxes I may need to make a reality! Anyway, enjoy princess and may you sleep well.

Sincerely,

Apple Cider
