Review: My Little Pony Season 1 Blu-ray (EDEL Kids)

Via Amazon: DVDs, Blu-ray

Via Amazon: DVDs, Blu-ray

Just in time for your easter basket, EDEL Kids has now published the first season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic on Blu-ray and DVD: ten hours of loving pony stories! Apart from the 26 episodes, they also contain three bonus videos, which brings us to our first point of criticism.

Hasbro has provided this bonus material to EDEL, which hardly warrants the title “bonus.” The clips are identical to videos that have been available on the official My Little Pony website since 2010; the extended opening has been available since 2011; and the music video to Love is in Bloom was also published in 2012 already. Especially the extended opening left a sour taste on the palate, as it bore the Hub branding. This goes to show the disappointing indifference of Hasbro Inc. towards the European market, because EDEL had great and interesting ideas for bonus material that just were not greenlit. More evidence is the fact that EDEL had to use 2010 vectors for the cover design, which look rather awkward from today’s perspective. But let’s get to the meat of the season set, the actual episodes.

Review of Limited Edition DVD (Germany)

SONY DSC

Christmas is around the corner, and if you forgot to buy a present for your loved ones, the following item will let you share your love for My Little Pony.

As a Christmas present for all fans of the show, EDEL Records released a remastered limited edition of the first DVD. Vivid colours, 5.1-sound, and an additional audio track are just the topping on the cupcake, because every DVD is paired with one brushable of the Royal Wedding toyline. EDEL Records took the criticism about the first volume to heart and did their best to fulfill our wishes with this limited edition. With the first three episodes and The Cutie Mark Chronicles, the most useful episodes to introduce someone new to the show are on the disc.

Editorial: Love but Intolerance

Teen Ponies by TheUnicornLord

In this season between the seasons on The Hub, we should speak about the last season. No, not how good or bad the episodes were, nor how you enjoyed them—I want to talk with you about Europe and season 2. “Wait,” some of you might say, “there is not such thing as season 2 in Europe!” But, strangely enough, there is a season 2 in Europe. Before you object that “season 2” is just the name of the British broadcaster for the second half of season 1 (caused by their weird airing schedule), I must point out that with “season 2” I really mean season 2.

Through several calls and email exchanges with Viacom Europe, SDI Media, and some of the dub voice actors, I got to know that the tapes of season 2 have already been finished since December 2011. Yes, I was curious when I saw clips from the Daring Do episode at Hasbro’s booth at the Nuernberg Toy Fair and asked Hasbro when we would get to see this episode. Currently it looks like we Europeans won’t get season 2 until 2013.

“What the hay,” you wonder, “the tapes are ready to air, but they will not do it?” Well, do not search the fault with the companies, search the fault with yourselves. All companies, who are involved in the dub version see just one picture: We the fans hate My Little Pony!

Stop! Everypony calm down and listen to the explanation. A dubbed version takes time, additional work and care. How would you feel, if you received only negative, destructive comments? How would you feel, if hundreds of people didn’t give a flying feather for your hard work and said that you chose the wrong job? How would you feel? Disappointed and miserable.

Review: German Audio Plays and DVDs

“You need to stop, reading these old dusty books… Find new friends!” That’s what Princess Celestia told Twilight Sparkle. Even though she is he smartest unicorn in Equestria, her grade in Friendship is an F. There is more to a young pony’s life than studying. So Twilight Sparkle is on her way to Ponyville to meet five very unique ponies: Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, and Applejack.

The blurbs on the freshly released My Little Pony DVDs and CDs just summarize vaguely the plot of the pilot episode. However this can’t stop an interested viewer from putting the disc in his DVD or CD player. While every DVD contains three episodes in chronological order, the CDs were cut to two.

Let us start with the audio play. Like most audio plays for cartoon series, dialogs from the show were directly copied onto the CD, accompanied by a narrator. Due to this narrator, you can enjoy the episodes in a very new way. Why, you ask? Some child audio play narrators have the habit to be sarcastic in some situations and sometimes “argue” with the characters in the story. Here, the narrator likes to make fun out of Rainbow Dash and also Spike (e.g., “magisches Briefkastenmaul” (magicial mailbox maw)). Nevertheless, the quality of the audio is a lot better than the TV version and on top of that, the songs made by Daniel Ingram got hugely improved in terms of sound quality. Sadly, only two episodes are on each disc, despite the fact that only half of the CD was used.

The DVDs are a different matter. Filled with three episodes and no extras, the average price of about €8 is too much for some. Also, due to license issues, only the German dub is on the disc. However, the picture and audio quality is better than the TV version but looks gray-washed compared to the iTunes version. The audio desync of the TV version was fixed, and it is interesting that EDEL used the original text display and not the German one. Furthermore, the DVD presents the show in 5.1 Dolby Digital sound and 576p 16:9. To sum up: The DVD is not perfect, like other ones for children. But if EDEL can fix the dubbing license issue, add extras like behind-the-scenes or the extended opening, the German DVDs should be the choice for everypony—especially since they are regio free.

I know some of you hate the German dub, and weirdly enough most of you are German, since other European viewers are envious of our localization quality. Remember that Hasbro went in our direction with the DVD and even re-synched some parts of the show to make them fit the older audience. So leave your high horse and enjoy some little pony fun. The audio play is something you can always enjoy, thanks to the narrator; the DVD is in its current state arguable, I must confess, but like in every economy, requests can change company decisions. If you want to support the show, buy it, if you want to experience the dub first before doing so, watch it legally on nick.de.

And now for those who want a final score:

Audio play: 9/10

DVD: 7/10
